The 8th graders designed a formal lab this week to test different factors that affect the rate of a reaction. In order to do this, they experimented with Alka-Seltzer rockets. The students tested factors such as temperature, surface area, and concentration to gather data and deduce if these increased/decreased the frequency of molecules colliding.
This week the students performed several labs to understand the properties of chemical and physical changes. They learned what factors signify both a chemical and physical change by experimenting with gummy bears and solving an exciting CSI mystery! The students also studied chemical reactions and used calcium chloride and ammonium nitrate to demonstrate both and an endothermic and exothermic reaction. The students were able to explain the release and absorption of energy in each process.
The 8th graders have been learning all about matter and it's phases. The students completed several activities to learn how matter is categorized based on it's physical and chemical properties. They also learned all about the phases of matter and conducted experiments to reinforce their knowledge of phase changes and molecular movement. The 8th graders even made their own ice cream to show transference of energy durning a phase change. What a delicious lab!
