Welcome to Science 8
I love science and my goal is to create fun and intriguing lessons so that you too will love science. Throughout the school year all of you will be challenged to think and act like scientists in the classroom, but there are many other roles that you will play in this classroom throughout the school year. In science, you will often be asked to be a mathematician to solve problems using formulas, and to manipulate and interpret lab data. Other times you will be asked to be an investigator who must look for clues to solve scientific mysteries and problems. Yet other times you may be asked to be an engineer by applying your science knowledge to build or improve something. Finally, you will also be asked to be writers who can demonstrate understanding of scientific concepts through technical writing. I hope you enjoy the variety of challenges that await you in science class this year.
Welcome to 8th grade! I look forward involving you in fun and meaningful science experiences throughout the school year that will spark your interest and bring out the scientist in you.
Content
Topics covered in this class are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Units covered will include Matter and its Interactions, Forces and Motion, Energy & Waves, and Earth’s Place in the Universe. We will be incorporating human impact and engineering practices throughout each unit.
A major focus will be on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) projects. There will be an emphasis on hands-on and inquiry based activities.
Supply List
All students may purchase the class materials listed on the website, or they may use the ones provided for them in class.
Every student will be using a graph composition book. One will be provided for every student. (suggested donation $2).
Educational Technology
The use of technology enhances student-learning, supports the foundation of Common Core standards, and prepares students with the necessary 21st century skills. District-adopted software programs that meet the requirements can be found at http://iusd.org/software. All other online software and websites are considered non-District adopted software; therefore, parent permission is required. Throughout the school year 8th grade science will be using the following software that is not listed by the district: Hypothes.is.com, Remind, Prezi.com, Infogr.am, Kahoot.it, Blogger.com, Weebly.com, Socrative.com, Edmodo.com.
Grading Policy
Absences are your responsibility! You must make up work within one week of absence. Points will be deducted for late work.
The best time to turn in late work and receive additional time and assistance is in tutorial.
All tests are announced. Tests may be made up, but once again, it is your responsibility to see me within one week!!!
Quizzes will be given throughout each unit to help monitor student understanding and reinforce study habits.
Note: Seating charts will be enforced and unauthorized seat changes will be reflected in your citizenship or work habits mark.
Gum chewing will be reflected in your citizenship or work habits grade.
Inappropriate use of or flagrant wasting of, class materials will be reflected in your citizenship or work habits mark. In addition, cleaning up lab stations after each lab will be reflected in the citizenship grade.
CheatingStudents caught in the act of cheating will receive an automatic “0” for that assignment. If this is a recurring behavior, parents and school administrators will be notified.
